Women of the Word Winter-Spring 2019

Ladies, God’s heart is moved by your cries for help, your shouts for joy, your unspoken worries. We know Him to be a God of unparalleled power and authority, but Mark’s account of Jesus paints Him as a deeply personal and intimate God too.

Join us, and author Lisa Harper, for this 7-session study beginning February 18, 2019 at 6:30 PM (Evening) and February 19, 2019 at 9:15 AM (Day) at First Presbyterian Church. Invite your friends!
We will expand our understanding of the Gospel, explore the depth of Jesus’ compassion and passion for humanity, and come to know the real Jesus of Scripture without the lens of man’s perspective.

Lisa Harper has a Master’s degree in Theology, is a former director of women’s ministry for Focus on the Family, is a national speaker, and is the author of fifteen Bible studies and books. If you would like to view the sample session, please visit the Lifeway site.

2019 Annual Family Retreat

Who is Christ? Who are we? Today we are constantly bombarded with vain commercial images, wellness gurus telling us to live OUR truth (not THE truth), and the latest fads all promising us health, wealth, and happiness. So, it is no surprise that spiritual confusion can happen to even the most well-meaning Christians. Just as Christ did, we are to love those around us radically, boldly, and mindfully. But this is easier said than done. Why is this self-giving love so difficult for us; and why does selfishness, greed, and sin come so easily? We will take deep look into who Christ is and how he lived. We will also take a look into our own lives and personally reflect on what changes we can make to allow our lives to be more reflective of Christ’s radical love. We will expand on scripture verses 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” and Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Come join us for this special weekend away in Montreat with your church family to be renewed spiritually, mentally, and physically.
  • Childcare provided for children under 5. Separate programming for Middle and Elementary ages.
  • Registration forms are available in the church office (or may be downloaded by clicking here) and are due Sunday, February 10th.
For questions of more information please contact Meredith Trout.

The Longest Night

I always get excited as we enter into the Advent / Christmas Season. I love the extra touches we add to our worship experiences – from the Advent Wreath Liturgy, to the extra musicians, to the special services. I enjoy the Christmas music playing from the radio and in the stores. I like seeing the lights on houses all decorated for the holidays.
Yet, I am always aware that this festive season is not always so festive for those who are
are experiencing grief at this time of year. The struggles of life do not take Christmas vacations, and sometimes the observance of Christmas just serves to highlight the deep loss one may be experiencing.
In an attempt to acknowledge this truth and care for those who are hurting, we held a “longest night” service last year. Through prayers, scripture readings, music, and silence, we proclaimed that God’s presence is there for those who mourn or struggle.
We will be holding this service again this year on Wednesday, December 19th (please note date change) at 7 p.m. In our time together, we will give voice to the pain of those are experiencing grief and loss, and at the same time we will proclaim the hope of the incarnation of Jesus. All will be reminded that God’s Word comes to shine light into the darkness of our lives. This service is for all who need the time and space to acknowledge their loss and sadness and to know that they are not alone. (If anyone would be interested in helping with this service, please speak with me as soon as possible.)
As we walk through this Advent / Christmas season, let us never forget the words of the Gospel of John, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5

Grace and peace to all.
Your friend and pastor,
Pastor Lee

Save the Date – WOW Fall 2018 Study

Women of the Word returns this fall (Monday evenings beginning September 10 or Tuesday mornings beginning September 11) with a new study by Lisa Harper entitled, “Job: An Unlikely Joy.”
“Joy is the constant companion of the woman who trusts in the Lord. And while you can find it in friends, family, and circumstances, unfailing, persistent joy will only ever overflow from your relationship with Jesus.
“Just ask Job, the man from Uz who clung to God’s goodness while all his worldly joys were stripped away. But how is it possible to hold onto such joy in times of sorrow? In this 7-session study by Lisa Harper, discover the redemptive side to Job’s story of suffering. Learn to use pain to strengthen your faith, point others to the gospel, and remember God’s providence will never take you to a place where His grace will not sustain you.” (source:
We invite all women interested in studying the Word of God to join us for this study and encourage you to invite your friends to join you on this journey as together we hold onto this promise from Job 8:21: “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with a shout of joy.”
Registration and first session for the Monday evening group will be September 10 at 6:30 p.m. Registration and first session for the Tuesday morning group will be September 11 at 9:15 p.m. We will begin each session in the church fellowship hall. Please bring your Bible and a pen. The cost of the study book is $12.00; scholarship funds are available. Child care will be provided for the Tuesday morning group at Kids’ Business (at the YMCA). Questions may be directed to either Katherine Team (336.242.4019) or Ann McMurray (336.239.4042).
Lisa Harper has a Master’s degree in Theology, is a former director of women’s ministry for Focus on the Family, is a national speaker, and is the author of fifteen Bible studies and books. If you would like to view the sample session, please visit the Lifeway site.
